Handweaving in Vermont
My name is Lee Greenewalt, and I have been weaving for 40 years. I moved with our young family to our farm in Shoreham in 1986; we raised 5 children here and kept sheep for 15 years. Now we have 8 grandchildren nearby; our son raises beef next door and our pastures are grazed by a neighbor's livestock.
Throughout, my looms have been clattering away, producing thousands of yards of fabric. I particularly love working with wool to keep people warm: I weave blankets large and small. I use custom-spun yarn from local fleece when I can. I enjoy designing with lots of color and texture.
All my life I have played with re-purposing materials, so it is natural that I came to weave rag rugs. Made mostly from recycled clothing, wool or cotton fabrics are cut into strips to fashion into bold, graphic floor coverings.
My most popular item is the humble hand towel. I use cotton yarns, interspersed with shiny rayon or crisp linen, in a myriad of colors. These towels are beautiful, useful, and durable; they are a true pleasure for mundane tasks.
Lastly, I love to knit! It gives me joy to to keep folks warm. I design hats and mittens in colorful patterns of wool yarns, with perhaps a little mohair or angora thrown in for good measure.

We are currently establishing an environment that enhances the experience of 'Big Sky Montana', here on our Retreat for Warriors. Our goal is to provide our visiting Warriors with the opportunity to rejuvenate their 'Sense of Self-Worth, Sense of Purpose, and Sense of Community'. We aspire to do so by providing them with conservation oriented surroundings here at the Retreat. In addition, we will provide the visiting Warriors with exposure to activities such as blacksmith crafts, wood work crafts, farming and ranching activities, and numerous other local community supported activities. Our purpose is to Serve these Warriors in an empathetic manner, and provide them with the opportunity to begin, continue, and sustain a positive, productive, and prosperous lifestyle.
